The Focus of this Programme is on educating and training students in both theoretical and Practical aspects of human rights application, drawing knowledge from historical, philosophical, legal, international and domestic dimension of human rights. It will also inculcate analytical skills amongst students, enabling them to undertake research and/or to be involved in the promotion and protection of human rights.

PgDHR 5101 – Introduction to Human Rights
PgDHR 5102 – Introduction to International Law and Human Rights Law
PgDHR 5103 – Human Rights Debates and Discourse
PgDHR 5104 – Research Methodology

Semester II

PgDHR 5201 – Domestic Mechanisms on Protection and Promotion of Human Rights
PgDHR 5202 – International/Regional mechanisms  on Protection and Promotion of Human Rights
PgDHR 5203 – International Humanitarian Law (IHL)
PgDHR 5204 – Contemporary Issues on Human Rights

The Teaching will be mainly based on application and the case-study approach, in addition to more traditional methods.

By-law of PGDip (HRts)

  • Duration: One year
  • Weekend Programme
  • SLQF level: 8
  • Number of Credits: 26
  • Medium of Instructions: English
  • A Bachelor’s degree from a recognized University/Institution in the relevant field; OR
  • Any other Bachelor’s degree, with prior learning/ work experience in the relevant field; OR
  • Relevant professional qualification from arecognized professional body acceptable to the Faculty Board and the Senate of the University of Colombo (hereinafter the Senate) with priorlearning/ work experience in the relevant field; OR
  • Completion of NVQ level 7 (equivalent to Bachelor’s degree in SLQF) with relevant work experience in the relevant field as determined by the Faculty Board and the Senate; OR
  • Diploma or Higher Diploma from a recognized institute or university or an equivalent qualification to SLQF Three/Four (03/04) with relevant work experience in the relevant field as determined by the Faculty Board of the FGS and the Senate; And
  • A good knowledge of English language and satisfactory performance at a selection test and/or selection interview.
  • Each application under clause (iii), (iv) and (v) shall be considered on its merit.
  • A person who wishes to apply for the FGS programmes shall forward the application to the Senior Assistant Registrar, Faculty of Graduate Studies, No.35/30, Pro. Stanley Wijesundara Mawatha, Colombo 07.

  • The students will be selected through an interview or a placement test or both.
  • The next intake will be announced via the website, at the time of calling for applicants.
