Introduction

The Master of Information Systems Management (MISM) one-year programme examines the design, development and management of information systems and prepares students for careers in systems design, planning and management. This programme offers expertise and knowledge by studying how information is used in organisations to improve value chains and decision making, in a state-of-the-art environment conducive of high-tech innovation, knowledge engineering and business intelligence. Through this programme, students will be trained to recognise and welcome change in the business and information environment created by social, economic, political and technical developments. And this programme equips candidates to design solutions to business information problems, and to offer strategic guidance to organisations that will enhance their management and governance.

  • Demonstrate thorough understanding of the concepts and practical applications of information systems in business organizations.
  • Describe the framework of information systems, its components and functionality and the business processes.
  • Apply and illustrate the strategic importance of the information technology to businesses and illustrate how these technologies are used in business operations and management.
  • Evaluate the role and importance of data/database resource management.
  • Familiarize students with the latest technologies to develop and enhance business information systems.
  • Explain and critically discuss the major theoretical and professional issues in business information systems.
  • Analyze these issues and apply, plan and implement possible solutions to solve these problems systematically and creatively.
  • Investigate business information systems problems through an independent study by utilising relevant methodologies for scholarly or professional purposes.

The MISM is a one-year academic programme consisting with two (02) semesters with 30 total credits. The total credits need to be completed through nine (09) compulsory course and two (02) elective courses (of 25 total credit values) and a guided independent study (of 5 credits). In each of the taught courses, 50 percent of the maximum marks shall be based on continuous assessments which shall assess the performance of the candidate at assignments, class-room tests, quizzes, reports, discussions, seminars, oral presentations, etc. The balance 50 percent of marks shall be used for assessing the performance of the candidates at the end-of-semester closed book written examination in an examination hall setting. Written examinations will be held at the end of semester I and II. Each of the eleven (11) courses and the independent research project shall carry a maximum Grade Point Value of 4.00. A candidate’s performance in each of the courses shall be graded and the calculation of Grade Point Average (GPA) is carried out considering the Grade Point Value (GPV) for each such course and the Credits allocated accordingly.

After completion of Semester I, candidates should work on the independent research study in the field of Business Information Systems under a supervisor appointed by the Senate on the recommendation of the Faculty Board. She/he should submit a project report containing a minimum of 6000 words and a maximum of 7000 words. The research project should represent sustained research carried out in the field of Information Systems Management and be a presentation of original work incorporating analytical and/or critical review of the subject matter of research and study.

The registration for MISM shall be deemed to have lapsed at the expiry of its period of validity. A candidate whose registration has so lapsed may renew her/his registration for a further period of another academic year, provided the Faculty Board considers her/him eligible for such registration. However, no registration shall be renewed after the expiry of three academic years from the end of the first period of registration.

  1. Candidates applying for the Master of Information Systems Management (MISM) shall have one of the following qualifications:
  2. A Bachelor’s degree from a recognized university/institution in Information Systems Management; or
  3. Any other bachelor’s degree, with prior learning/work experience in Information Systems Management; or
  4. Postgraduate Diploma (SLQF 8) from a recognized university/institution or an equivalent qualification acceptable to the Faculty Board of the FGS and the Senate of University of Colombo with prior learning/work experience in Information Systems Management; or
  5. Professional qualification from a recognized professional body acceptable to the Faculty Board of the FGS and the Senate of the University of Colombo with prior learning/work experience in Information Systems Management; or
  6. Completion of NVQ level 7 (equivalent to Bachelor’s degree in SLQF) with relevant work experience in Information Systems Management determined to be acceptable by the Faculty Board of the FGS and the Senate of the University of Colombo;
    And
  • A good knowledge of English language and satisfactory performance at a selection interview and/or selection test.
