Introduction

The FGS-Colombo is dedicated to promote education, training and research in a multitude of disciplines. In keeping with this mission, the MPhil in Clinical Psychology is envisaged to fulfill the necessity of a high quality postgraduate training in clinical psychology in the country and in the region.

This programme is well suited for the individual who is interested in a professional career as a clinical psychologist. The programme involves both the scientific understanding of people and the application of this knowledge to human psychological problems. The programme would be conducted with the expertise of academics from the universities in Sri Lanka and overseas. Resource persons from other public and private sector organizations in Sri Lanka would also participate.

The programme aims to provide students with essential skills in clinical psychology which include assessment of mental health, psychological, behavioural and systemic issues, drawing from the theory and practice of evidence based approaches. The programme would also impart expertise on psychological therapies in the treatment of diverse mental health issues and illnesses. The Programme emphasizes the development of both clinical and research skills, an essential and critical aspect of a clinical psychologist’s profession.

Foundational knowledge will begin with in-class lectures and case study learning, followed by supervised practical applications in clinical placements. Trainees will be assessed via written examinations, clinical reports, evaluation of clinical work, a research dissertation and viva voce examinations. The programme will consist of three components, including coursework, clinical work and research and will be conducted on a full time basis. Lectures will be conducted at the FGS- Colombo, while clinical work will be at a range of clinical settings located both in and outside Colombo.
