Introduction

The Master of Gender and Women’s Studies (MGWS) is an inter-disciplinary degree course designed to give advanced grounding in feminist theory and methodology taught through the discussion of contemporary social issues. The programme intends to achieve a satisfactory balance between theory and practice. It draws from a wide range of perspectives and considers diverse analytical tools for the analysis and theorisation of social policy, law, international development, and globalisation, as well as culture, identity, power, climate and sexuality from a uniquely gendered perspective.

The target group of the program includes, professionals seeking specialization from education, government and public administration, policy, law, NGOs and human rights organisations, social work, counselling, journalism and media; recent graduates from disciplines such as sociology, political science, literature, psychology, cultural studies; academics; activists and community leaders in grassroots activism and community work; interdisciplinary thinkers and anyone passionate about gender and women.

  • Be knowledgeable on the genealogy of feminist theory and the different theories and concepts of gender and women’s studies
  • Be a critical thinker in engaging and examining contemporary debates in international development, social policy and planning, law, politics, media and climate governance.
  • Be able to evaluate the Sri Lankan laws, policies and practices pertaining to gender equality
  • Be a professional who is empathetic and ethical in their line of work and infuse new thinking and action in addressing issues related to women and gender in Sri Lankan society

  • SLQF level: 9
  • Bachelor’s degree from a recognized University/ Institution in a field relevant to the subject matter/s of Gender and Women’s Studies; OR
  • Any other Bachelor’s degree, with prior learning/ work experience relevant to the subject matter/s of Gender and Women’s Studies; OR
  • A Postgraduate Diploma (SLQF 8) from a recognized University/ Institution or an equal qualification acceptable to the Board of Graduate Studies and Senate of the University of Colombo with prior learning/ work experience in a field relevant to the subject matter/s of Gender and Women’s Studies; OR
  • A Professional qualification from a recognized professional body acceptable to the Board of Graduate Studies and Senate of University of Colombo with prior learning/ work experience in a field relevant to the subject matter/s of Gender and Women’s Studies; OR
  • Completion of NVQ level 7 (equivalent to Bachelors degree in SLQF) with relevant work experience in a field relevant to the subject matter/s of Gender and Women’s Studies as determined by the Board of Graduate Studies and Senate of the University of Colombo;
    AND
  • A good knowledge of English language and satisfactory performance at a selection test/ selection interview.
