Introduction

The Focus of this programme is on strategic manufacturing management at corporate and national levels. The course is designed to impart an understanding of the structure and dynamics associated with sustainable competitiveness in manufacturing to suit the needs of industry practitioners.
The Faculty is drawn from professionals and academics in the field of manufacturing management.

The Teaching will be mainly based on industry applications and the case-study approach in addition to more traditional methods.

Course Unit : PGDip.MM 5101 – Industrial Organization

  1. Appraise history of manufacturing from the industrial revolution to the present in economic perspective and present global business operations.
  2. Understand the impact of supply and demand relationship.
  3. Using marginal analysis.
  4. Understand impact of economies of scale and economies of scope
  5. Determining pricing strategies.
  6. Understand industrialization policies and strategies

Course Unit : PGDip.MM 5102 – Manufacturing Planning and Control

  1. Apply basic quantitative methods to manufacturing planning situations.
  2. Develop demand forecasts using quantitative and qualitative tools.
  3. Preparation of MRP/MPS schedules
  4. Inventory optimization
  5. Describe an ERP system suitable for a medium sized factory.
  6. Identify suitable location and layout strategies.
  7. Determine distribution requirements for supply chains.
  8. Ascertain optimum dispatching programmes.

Course Unit : PGDip.MM 5203 – Accounting and Control for Manufacturing 

  1. Application of Management accounting techniques in the day to day affairs of the business.
  2. Understand the impact of Cost concepts and relate it to manufacturing activities.
  3. Preparation of budgets for manufacturing
  4. Understand the different costing systems and methods that would be applicable to the manufacturing industry.
  5. Ascertain methods of capital investment decision making
  6. Apply ratio analysis.
  7. Ascertain the impact of International Finance

Course Unit : PGDip.MM 5204 – Industrial Marketing

  1. Appraise the role of industrial marketing in manufacturing environment.
  2. Develop a product strategy based on market characteristics.
  3. Develop sales force
  4. Develop an industrial marketing plan and communication.

Course Unit : PGDip.MM 5105 – Industrial Relations and Industrial Law

  1. Appraise the principles of design and culture of manufacturing organizations.
  2. Appraise the impact of Integrative Management Issues in globalized manufacturing scenario.
  3. Appraise the role of the manager as a Strategic Decision Maker
  4. Appraise the role human resource management in a manufacturing organization.
  5. Understand the legal and social environment of Business.
  6. Understand the legal aspects of supply chain management.

Course Unit : PGDip.MM 5106 – Total Quality Manufacturing

  1. Appraise the impact of JIT and TQM on a Manufacturing company.
  2. Appraise the methods of productivity improvement through the waste reduction.
  3. Implement the pull production environment in a Manufacturing company.
  4. Develop statistical process control methods
  5. Implement organization safety programs.

Course Unit : PGDip.MM 5207 – Technology and Innovation Management

  1. Appraise the historical role played by Technology and Innovation in in evolution of humans.
  2. Developing and implementing innovation and technology management strategies in manufacturing organizations.
  3. Implementing a knowledge management framework in manufacturing organizations

Course Unit : PGDip.MM 5208 – Intorduction to Manufacutring Science

  1. To develop the skills necessary to recognize the interplay of key underlying principles that drive the operating relationships within a manufacturing organization.
  2. To model the manufacturing processes for further investigation of their behavior under the effect of variability.

  • The programme of study leading to the PGDip MM Degree, unless otherwise decided by the Senate on the recommendation of the Faculty Board for special reasons, shall be one academic year with eight (08) courses of 30 total credits, offered in two semesters. In the case of the MMM Degree the schedule shall be one academic year with four (4) taught courses and a dissertation of 15 credits amounting to a total of thirty one (31) credits, offered in two semesters. Thus the overall credit value of MMM Degree will amount to sixty one (61) credits since the PGDip MM Degree embodies the first year of MMM Degree programme.
  • The titles of courses, syllabi, course codes, credit points and other details are those set out in the schedule and the Senate shall have power, on the recommendation of the Faculty Board to amend, add to, delete from or vary the courses, their titles, syllabi, course codes, credit points and other details of the programme. Such amendments shall come into effect after due notice.
  • The Programme of Study and Examinations leading to the PGDip MM/MMM Degree shall be conducted in the conventional mode and/or through the information communication technology driven on-line mode or a combination of multi-modes and these By-Laws, and other relevant By-Laws, Rules and Regulations passed by the University shall be so applied and interpreted in order to facilitate the effective conduct of the study programme without compromising its integrity and quality.
  • The medium of instruction and examination shall be English.
  • The Senate, on the recommendation of the Faculty Board shall appoint a Board of Examiners to conduct examinations and assess the performance of candidates.

  • A Bachelor’s degree from a recognized University/Institution with manufacturing allied subject area ; OR
  • Any other Bachelor’s degree, with prior learning/work experience in manufacturing allied subject area ; OR
  • Professional qualification in manufacturing allied subject area from a recognized professional body which is acceptable to the Faculty Board and Senate of University with prior learning/work experience in manufacturing allied subject area; OR
  • Completion of NVQ level 7 (equivalent to Bachelor’s degree in SLQF) with relevant work experience in manufacturing allied subject area as determined by the Faculty Board and Senate of the University; AND
  • A good knowledge of English language and satisfactory performance at a selection test and/or interview.
